Once upon a time, there was a woman named Dayang Sumbi. She had a son name Sangkuriang. He is a handsome young man.One day, Dayang Sumbi asked Sangkuriang to hunt a pig in a jungle. He went to the jungle accompanied by Tumang, his mother’s dog. There, he saw a fat pig and strung his bow and z-z-z-z ! The arrow hissed towards the pig, and hit but not killed her. Wounded, she vanished into the undergrowth.
“Come on Tumang, run after her !” Sangkuriang shouted, eager to taste the pork. But Tumang, however, did not move. Sanguriang lost his control. In his anger, he killed Tumang and gave his lung to her mother.
When his mother asked him what lung it was, he said its Tumang’s. he told her mother, he killed Tumang because he did not obey his command. For one moment, Dayang Sumbi was speechless. Then in rage, she took a ladle and threw it to him. It struck his forhead and blood dropped out of the wound. This left later on a scar on the spot. Then, Dayang Sumbi sent him away.

Sanguriang left his house and wandered trough the woods. He walked for years. Finnaly, he returned to his native place, but did not recognize it any longer. There, he meet beautiful girl. Charmed by her beauty, he immeadiately proposed her, unaware that she was his own mother. The girls promised to marry him. For some time, they loved each other tenderly, making plans for their wedding day. But one day, she discovered the scar on his forehead.
“That wound !” she whispered, and that moment she realised that he was her own son who had come back to his village. She tried to tell Sangkuriang that their marriage was imposible. But Sangkuriang did not want to change his plan.
Dayang Sumbi had an idea and said to him, “ I will marry you if you can dam up the Citarum river and build a big vessel in one night”. Sangkuriang accepted that condition and started to work.
Because of his magic power, its was seen that he could finish his work. Dayang Sumbi got alarmed and hit upon another plan to prevent the marriage. She stretched the red woven vell over the castern side of the plain. This gave an impression that the sun was rising, which meant that time was up for Sangkuriang.
“In vain !” he shouted in despair and at the some kicked the vessel upside – down. Then he mad for the south then there was a fload and Sangkuriang could not escape.
The mountain of Tangkuban Perahu is trought to be the overturned vessel of Sangkuriang.
